Friends of the Ants draw made at Committee Night In

The festive spirit(s) visited the Ants clubhouse on Saturday night as the Committee had their annual Christmas Night In and we also held the Christmas Friends of the Ants draw. Club vice-president Bernard ‘Dixie’ Kilcullen won the £500 prize and there were £100 winners in Ross Docherty, Derek Rhodden, James McKenna Jr, Susan Cusack and Robert Simpson. The brilliant Gerry Lafferty, of Gerry Lafferty Photography who is the club official photographer, set up a selfie booth in the club house. Check out the gallery below to see the snaps.

Thorniewood Game postponed

Today’s McBookie West Region Central District First Division match away to Thorniewood has been called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

A friendly match v Ashfield will take place at McKenna Park in its place with a 1:30pm Kick Off

Sinning Saints crash out of Scottish.

The Ants crashed out of this years ETHX Energy Scottish Junior Cup in the 3rd round following a 3-1 defeat against Stonehaven. Things started brightly for the Govan side when PAUL O’BRIEN headed them infront after 16 minutes only for RICHARD WYNESS to level for the home side after 36 minutes. The match was turned on it’s head in the 38th minute when Mansare was sent off for the Ants. A further blow was dealt when the Ants started the second haf without captain Ronnie McDonald who was replaced at half time through injury. Stonehaven made their man advantage count in the second half with another goal for WYNESS in the 52nd minute which was followed up by an Armstrong strike in the 62nd minute. Credit to the Ants who dominated for large parts of the match even with the numerical disadvantage, missing a few chances and having strong a strong penalty claim turned down in the 82nd minute. To rub salt into the wounds the Govan side finished with 9 men as Paul Gordon got his second yellow and dreams of the final turned to dust on a soaking wet day in the North of Scotland.

Stonehaven Match Preview

Saturday 5th of December will hopefully see the first ever meeting of Stonehaven and The Ants. The match was originally scheduled for the 21st of November but the recent bad weather has seen the match postponed twice so here’s hoping third time is a charm. The Ants beat Forres Thistle 6-0 after getting a bye into round two and Stonehaven saw off West Region side Shotts Bon Accord 2-0 in the second round following a bye in round one.

Stonehaven have had a great start to the season currently sitting top of the McBookie North Region Superleague, 8 points clear of their nearest challengers, Banks O’Dee, albeit with Banks O’Dee having 3 games in hand. Their last game was on the 14th of November which saw them run out 4-2 winners over Dufftown so it will be a hard test for Cotter’s charges with a place in the 4th round of the ETHX Energy Scottish Junior Cup at stake but one that I’m sure the boys will be up for.

Speaking in the Evening Times last week James had this to say “Stonehaven’s pedigree is deserving of our respect but nothing more and if we play to our abilities then we’re in with a shout of causing an upset. We’re a very young side, as many as seven of the guys are teenagers but the centre back pairing of Abu Mansare and Paul O’Brien are committed and no-nonsense defenders ideally suited for a Cup tie away from home while Willie Duncan is more than capable of knocking in a goal or two.”

A bus will be leaving McKenna Park at 9am for the long journey north (Stonehaven is in Aberdeenshire) and upon it’s return hopefully we have our names in the hat for the next round.

It shapes up to be an intriguing tie and as always our official twitter feed will keep you right up to date with all the goings on if you can’t make the trip

Govan loves Christmas 2015

Ants players Findlay McKenzie and Martin Fitzpatrick took part in this years Govan Loves Christmas Swich On event last night where Jade McGuire from XFactor turned on the lights. The club donated 4 season tickets for the raffle and we look forward to seeing the lucky winners at McKenna Park soon. The event saw School Choirs, a Govan Christmas market, Facepainting, balloon modelling and of course Santa’s Grotto all in action as well as a guest appearance by radio DJ Steve McKenna and a fireworks display!. Judging by the photo’s on social media the event was a success and as a club that are proud of our Govan roots we were delighted to be invited to take our part.
