Saint Anthonys 3 v 4 Arthurlie
Rampant 'Lie were superb in the first half and threatened to put
the result beyond doubt, Saints came storming back in the second
half but a schoolboy error certainly cost them at least a share
of the points.
The game played at a frantic pace throughout with the visitors
opening their account in the 2nd minute when McFadden powered
home a header from short range. 4 minutes later Saints equalised
when a Mulheron pass sent Miller through on goal, The midfielder
held off a strong challenge before shooting low across the
keeper into the corner of the net. The goal celebrations had not
even finished when 'Lie took the lead seconds later when an
attempted clearance landed at the feet of Hughes who hit the
back of the net. The visitors then threatened to run riot but
Hughes hit a post then Turner produced an outstanding save from
a Johnston shot onto the crossbar. Arthurlie added a third from
the spot when Johnston was felled in the box. He took the kick
himself and sent Turner the wrong way to make it 1-3 at half
time.
Saints got a massive boost in the 46th minute when Callaghan
neatly sidestepped a 'Lie defender then sent a looping 25 yard
half volley over the keeper and into the net. Saints confidence
was growing and McCuish came close with a 20 yard shot. A series
of corners ensured but the 'Lie defence held firm. With 15
minutes left the Ants gifted a fourth goal when Mansare won the
ball on the touchline, He eased past a couple of players then
for whatever reason decided despite having many options, to pass
the ball across his own 6 yard box straight to Bradford who
couldn't believe his luck as he tapped home from 4 yards. Even
although it was a severe body blow to the Ants they deserve
great credit and refused to give in. They got their reward in
the 84th minute when Mulheron converted a penalty after he had
been fouled in the box. Saints then applied the pressure but a
few shots off target and sterling work by the 'Lie defence meant
that the visitors left with three points and the Ants left
thinking what might have been
