Glencairn 1 v 1 Saint Anthony's
The remaining ten minutes of the match produced all the talking
points. Ants players felt that with McDonald lying injured by a
late tackle Glens should have put the ball out Glens had other
ideas and a long punt saw McDougall onside the ref who had been
running towards the injured player surprisingly let play
continue and the striker beat Turner from 18 yards.
The opening 45 minutes saw both teams cancel each other out with
chances few, if any. I can recall a shot from the Glens number 7
which dipped over the bar and an early chance for the Ants that
came to nothing

The next 45 were an improvement especially when Mulheron burst
through but his shot was blocked by the Glencairn 'keeper,
McMillan, McEwan and Williams all saw goal attempts blocked in
the 6 yard box while McDonald and Mansare blocked similar
attempts from the Glens. Then came the controversial goal. As
McDonald cleared he was caught by a lunging tackle which the
referee failed to spot. With the ball in the Glens area the Ants
Players assumed the ball would be kicked out of play and
virtually stopped. McDougall latched onto the long ball, got the
break of the ball off of Turner spun round and shot into the
empty net much to the delight of the Glens players and
management. Saints Dugout and the Players protested bitterly and
hopefully learned a lesson to play to the whistle at all times
and teams are not compelled to put the ball out of play when a
player is lying injured. It certainly livened up the remaining
minutes with Mulligan and McDougall involved with each others
handbags and both received a second yellow card reducing both
teams to 10 men. Justice was done in the 90th minute when a shot
was struck away on the goal-line by a defenders hand for a clear
penalty and the referee duly pointed to the spot. Mulheron
making no mistake from 12 yards.
