Saint Anthony's 1 v 0 Dunipace
The Narrow score-line suggests a tight game but countless
chances, goal-line clearances and the woodwork combined to keep
the score low in what was a terrific match.
Saints started the brighter with a Taylor volley flashing across
the goal mouth. They took the lead in the 12th minute when a
long throw-in from Elliot saw Taylor out-jump the 'Pace defence
then place a powerful header that the keeper touched but
couldn't keep out. Minutes later it should have been 2 when the
keeper could only parry a Taylor shot into the path of Callaghan
who blazed over under pressure from 8 yards. Muir was given a
good chance but was quickly closed down by the Ants defence.
Williams, who was terrorising the visitors with some brilliant
runs sent over yet another cross and although Callaghan was on
target Orr cleared off the line. 'Pace were unlucky to see a 30
yard thunderbolt from Muir hit the outside of the post for a
goal kick. Taylor then connected to another Williams cross but
Gary MacMillan cleared then the same combination ended with
Taylor's effort cleared off the line by McCafferty.
Half Time - Saint Anthony's 1 v 0 Dunipace
The visitors started the second half with a strong wind at their
back and although Saints kept possession well it was only a
matter of time before they created chances of their own.
Williams made a crucial clearance at the far post touching away
from Cullen and to everyone's surprise the ref awarded a goal
kick. An Ants Trialist then blocked a Muir shot then from a
corner Muir again connected this time heading off the crossbar
which Turner punched to safety. Saints replied with a Ford free
kick cleared a yard from goal then a net-bound shot from
Callaghan was deflected for a corner. The final quarter of the
game saw the visitors push forward in numbers. Pace striker Muir
was again unlucky to see a good effort deflected away and then
Graeme MacMillan missed their best chance of the game when he
shot over from 8 yards with only 'keeper Turner to beat. Try as
the might Dunipace were running out of idea's against a well
marshalled Ants defence and almost got caught on the break with
Ants striker Henderson forcing a superb fingertip save from
Hutton. There being no more chances Saints collected three
priceless points but I'm sure no one who was at the game would
have begrudged Dunipace at least a point for their second half
display.
