Saint Anthony's 1v 0 Blantyre Vics
A
rare Steven Mulligan goal gave the Ants their first win since
October against an on form Blantyre Vics team
Blantyre certainly enjoyed the opening 20 minutes with McNeil
having three good opportunities but shots all went over the
crossbar. Saints had only really a couple of half chances during
this spell with McMullan shooting wide after a nice 1-2 with
Mulheron then Williams failed by inches to head goalward.
McCardle should have scored when a goal-mouth scramble in the
Ants box fell nicely for the winger who's shot hit the post from
6 yards. The longer the game progressed the confidence began to
flow and the Ants began to enjoy their best spell of the game
but Mulheron, McMullan and Williams all had efforts saved by
Kerr. Just before the interval a Vic's breakaway on the left saw
Watson clear at the far post but his shot hit the side netting
Half Time - Saint Anthony's 0 v 0 Blantyre Vic's
Saints started the second period better and an early goal-mouth
scramble saw Kerr save from Mulheron then cleared as Williams
looked set to score from the rebound. Kerr again produced
another fine save when he finger-tipped an effort from Mulheron
over the bar. Vic's were rarely seen as an attacking force as
most of their build up faltered around the edge of the Ants box.
However Boylan produced some magic racing towards the Ants
defence but he shot wildly past. Saints then continued to apply
the pressure and McMullan came close with a neat chip, Then
McDermott popped up on the goal-line to deny Man of the Match
Mulheron. McNeill then shot past however the breakthrough came
in the 74th minute when Ford's cross was cleared to the edge of
the box, up stepped Mulligan to send a low powerful shot into
the bottom right hand corner of the net. Vic's looked a beaten
side now and the only further chances created both fell to
McMullan with a shot superbly turned away by Kerr and a header
from 6 yards that whistled past the post.
Ants Team - Turner, Loughton, Miller, Hare (McIlhatton 65),
Mansare, Mulligan, Williams, Callaghan (Findlay 65, Henderson
