 Benburb 1 v 3 St Anthony's

Ants avenged their defeat of three weeks ago when the Bens won by the odd goal in five and although this game was not a footballing classic it had all the Derby passion, bookings, penalties and an ordering off for good measure.

There was controversy in the opening minutes when a Bens defender appeared to punch away a cross from Hare but despite loud appeals the ref waved play on. Bens strode forward and a cross from Thomson saw McGlinchey head over. The same player then found the net minutes later but the whistle had already sounded for an earlier infringement. The home side then won a free kick from a good position but Gibson shot wide. Ants for their part saw Mulligan head over a cross from Ford then in 36 minutes Ritchie felled McMullan 6 yards from goal, The Ants hitman regained his composure and slotted the ball home from the penalty spot and give Heafey no chance. Saints scored what they thought was a second when Elliot who was clearly offside was allowed to continue, his square cross was netted by McMullan only for the ref to try and correct his earlier mistake by chalking off the goal. Heafey had to be replaced by sub 'keeper Ghatias who denied McMullan with a tremendous save. Deep into first half injury time Robertson fired a clearance by Turner inches wide of the left hand post. Bens took the initiative early in the second half and got the equaliser when Boyle shot high past Turner from a Ferguson cross. The home side now looked more composed and created a couple of chances that failed to produce any reward. The game started to get the better of referee Hodge and a number of wild tackles and off the ball incident's didn't even merit a talking to. In between McMullan saw a goal bound shot cleared by Thomson then Boyle shot wide from a good position. Saints got a second penalty when Robertson foolishly tried to avenge an earlier altercation with Ford right infront of the referee who instantly pointed to the spot. Henderson sent the keeper the wrong way and it was 2-1 to the Ants. Ritchie did see a header land on top of the net but the contest was over in 82 minutes when Henderson notched his double and the Ants 3rd with a superb lob over the keeper. Hare was then shown a second yellow to reduce the Ants to 10 but they easily held on for a fine victory.
